Electricity Emissions by Fuel Type

Each fuel's contribution to our national emissions includes those produced upstream. For example, wind power generates electricity without direct emissions of greenhouse gases; the main emissions come from the manufacturing, transportation, and installation of turbines, but these are relatively low over the turbine's lifecycle.

Coal produces the highest volume of CO2 emissions per unit of electricity generated (because it is a highly emissions-intensive fuel).

Mt CO₂-e  =  megatonnes (million tonnes) of carbon dioxide equivalent
