Explainer

  • Where does your power come from? This group of charts and data shows which fuel sources power Australia's main electricity networks.
  • Most of Australia's electricity comes from coal, although brown coal reliance is falling as plants are decommissioned. Wind and solar are growing sources of energy.
  • This data, via OpenNEM, shows fuels feeding electricity grids in Tasmania, Victoria, SA, NSW, ACT and coastal Queensland. WA and NT not currently included. Trend data updated at end of month.

Explainer

  • How much of your power comes from renewable sources? This data group shows the proportion of electricity that comes from renewables.
  • Fuels included are solar, wind, hydro and bioenergy. They're called 'renewable' because the fuel source can be replenished. The jagged lines indicate seasonality. Renewables are stronger when there is more sun and wind.
  • Data source: OpenNEM. Trend data updated at end of month. WA and NT not currently included.

  • Tasmania is a leader because of its hydropower capability. South Australia also relies on renewables for most of its electricity.

  • Which states rely more on imported electricity? This data group shows the proportion of electricity imported and exported by each state and territory.
  • The National Electricity Market (NEM) lets states trade electricity with eachother, depending on supply and demand. Tasmania and South Australia import more than other states.
  • Data source: OpenNEM. ACT data is part of NSW. WA and NT are not part of the NEM.
