Australia's renewables capacity: how much can the country make?

Shifting to renewable energy has two parts:

  • First, we need to make it
  • Then, we need to use it

Australia has pledged to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.

This promise is about making renewable energy. It’s the sheer capability of generating it.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Australia’s renewable energy generation capacity in 2022 was 49 GW.

So, if we intend to fulfil this pledge, that means our 2030 target is 147 GW.

The Clean Energy Council reports ‘additional’ capacity each year, which is how OnlyFacts updates its data sooner.

It says we added 5.9GW in 2023, which means Australia achieved a domestic step change also.
